Welcome to the

DIY Kazoo

I think it’s safe to say that children love to make noise. They love to make noise themselves or use objects that make noise for them. Babies are often attracted to musical toys more so than non-musical toys. I don’t know about you but my favorite kind of noise is music! This activity teaches you how to make your very own musical instrument.

A Little History…

Did you know National Kazoo Day occurs in the month of January? That’s right, it’s celebrated January 28th each year! Although there is no official documentation to confirm, the kazoo is said to be invented by Alabama Vest (an African American in Macon, Georgia) around 1840. The kazoo has been used for hundreds of years in Africa, usually for ceremonial purposes. There is even a kazoo museum in Beaufort, SC!

  • Cardboard Tube
  • Craft or Duct Tape (this is used to accessorize your Kazoo)
  • Waxed Paper
  • Rubber Band
  • Scissors

  1. Use decorative craft or Duct tape to cover the cardboard tube.
  2. Cut out a square of the waxed paper and use it to cover one end of the tube with a small rubber band.
  3. That’s it! Let your child blow into the end of the tube that is not covered with the waxed paper and ENJOY!
